I really liked Fio and totally supported her over Gina. The name Marco Pagot is an homage to the Pagot Brothers, grandfathers of Italian animation.
#Porco rosso plane poster movie
There’s a really nice nostalgic, old movie feel, and not just because Curtis has ties to Hollywood. But the second time I saw it I thought it was wonderful – who knows how these things happen? Even with the huge emphasis on airplanes in which I have no interest I still thought it was so fun – and I’m so curious about the curse which sounded more like a manifestation of his survivor’s guilt as well as a result of his loss of faith in humanity. The first time I saw this film I thought it was beyond bizarre, and not just the whole pig thing. With Curtis, his women problems with Gina and Fio, and the Italian government intent on arresting him, maybe it’s not much easier being a pig than a man.
At the shop he meets Piccolo’s cute as pie granddaughter, Fio, a mechanical genius who tags along.
After an American pilot, the sleazy Curtis, guns down his plane he must go to his old friend Piccolo for repairs – trailed by the secret police all the while for his anti-government stance. His home base is the Hotel Adriano where his maybe lady-love, Gina, reigns as chanteuse and hospitable owner extraordinaire. During World War I he was Marco Pagot, a flying ace, but now during the Great Depression he is a cursed bounty hunter capturing air pirates on the Adriatic (this is an alternate reality, mind you – though considering that there’s a flying pig I suppose you could have guessed that). And the story of the cursed Italian pig-fighter ace-man is one of them.Įveryone knows who Porco Rosso is, but not everyone quite knows what he is. Porco Rosso ( Kurenai no Buta/ The Crimson Pig) is one of the Studio Ghibli movies that I loved – I like all of them (mostly), but I love only a handful.
